Description:Coffee pot made by Thomas Whieldon
Fenton, Staffordshire
1745-1750
The pot is earthenware and has a crabstock handle and spout. It is decorated with brown tortoiseshell mottling, and light green and grey-green splashes. There is a raised vine decoration of leaves and grapes on the body and lid. Thomas Whieldon (1719-1795) was one of the leading potters of the 18th Century. By 1740 he was master potter at the manufactory at Fenton where he remained for forty years. He went into partnership with Josiah Wedgwood in 1754 and helped to launch the careers of the famous potters Josiah Spode and Ralph and Aaron Wood. Whieldon was well known for his tortoiseshell-ware, of which this is an example.
