Description:This small wooden barrel, or costrel, was used by farm labourers to carry weak beer or cider out to the fields during harvesting. During harvesting labourers were out in the fields all day and they needed a large amount of fluids to sustain them. Clean water was difficult to find and so weak beer was used as a safer alternative. The costrel has four iron stays and a metal carrying handle that has a hole beneath it. The bung is missing.
