Description:
Black and white photograph by Walden Hammond inside the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.
Photograph of a teaching session in a deep saline bath.
Saline water was used as a curative agent from the time the Royal Pump Rooms opened in 1814. Originally it was prescribed as a drink as well as being used for bathing. Saline baths were used in the 20th Century for general conditions, muscular rheumatism, gout, scrofula, kidney, liver and stomach complaints. Air was bubbled through the baths to enhance its therapeutic properties and increase the buoyancy of the water.
