Description:
Philips Wouwerman (manner of) (1614-1668)
Outside the Farrier's Shop, Dawn
Oil on wood
345mm x 400mm
The scene appears to be set in front of a blacksmith's shop, which is on the left. A skittish horse has been led into an enclosure. Two men are controlling the horse while being watched by a small group of people, including a little boy who is pointing at the procedure. The blacksmith is reshoeing the left hind leg of a white horse in the centre and a soldier is waiting with a third horse.
Philips Wouwerman was the eldest son of a minor painter from Alkmaar, Paulus Joostens Wouwerman (d. 1642). His two brothers Pieter (1623-82) and Johannes (1629-66) became painters as well. Probably trained at first by his father, Philips Wouwerman may have been a pupil of Frans Hals, and then went to Hamburg in the late 1630s where he married Annetje Pietersz van Broeckhof. In 1640 he was back in Haarlem where he joined the painters' guild of St Luke. It has yet to be ascertained whether this painting was based on an authentic work by Wouwerman or whether it was an imitation of his style. An eighteenth-century date seems most likely, both in view of the appearance of the panel and of the popularity of Wouwerman's work in this century.
