Date:1914
Description:
A colour postcard with a portrait of Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia in military uniform.
Second cousin of Czar Nicholas II, Grand Duke Nicholas was made Commander in Chief of the Russian army in 1914. One of the most skilled commanders in the Russian army, he was nevertheless removed from office in 1915 when Czar Nicholas II took personal command of the troops. He continued his career as Vice-Roy of Caucasia and, together with General Yudenich, achieved great success against the Turks. He captured and held on to territory until the Russian Revolution led to that country's withdrawal from fighting in 1917. As a member of the Russian aristocracy, he was forced to live in exile in Italy, and later France, until his death in 1929.
This is one of a set of military postcards probably produced at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
