Description:This painting of the poet Dante, belonged to the author George Eliot. It was given to her by the artist Sir Frederic Burton (1816-1900) after she allowed him to paint her portrait in 1865. This work is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. George Eliot (born Mary Ann Evans) was a local authoress based in the Coventry and Nuneaton district, from 1819-1880.
