Description:An Italian who inspired Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The work of Italian poet and dramatist Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533) had considerable influence over in English writing in Shakespeare's time, inspiring not only Shakespeare himself and Edmund Spenser, but also Robert Greene and George Gascoigne, among others. Ariosto’s portrait surmounts the elaborate title-page of the 1634 English translation of Orlando Furioso. Full title: Ludovico Ariosto, Orlando Furioso in English heroical verse by Sir John Harington now thirdly revised, London, printed by G. Miller for J. Parker, 1634.
