Description:Barford Church of England schoolchildren in May Day dress with Sam Bennett, the well known Fiddler from Ilmington. 1912
[The children are dressed for Morris dancing, to perform the 'Bacca Pipes' Morris Jig, as shown by the 'churchwarden' clay pipes crossed on the ground and being held.
The Bacca Pipes Jig is interesting, because it was a regular item in adult Morris from before 1914 to certainly through the 1930's, promoted as a solo or pairs jig by the English Folk Dance Society (Later English Folk Dance and Song Society), but the Barford group are unusual both in numbers, and in being children. They may have been taught by Sam Bennett, who is known to have performed the Jig himself on several occasions. (Information received as feedback November 2021)]
