Description:The Archbishop of Canterbury (The Most Hon. and The Rt. Rev. Frederick Temple) unveiling the Thomas Hughes Statue on June 24th 1899. This statue was erected by subscription amongst Old Rugbians and others. It is the work of Mr. T. Brock, R.A. The figure, more than life size, is of white marble and stands on a white pedestal of grey granite, the total height being about 18 feet. On the pedestal is the following inscription - "Thomas Hughes, Q.C.,M.P., author of "Tom Brown". Born October XIX, MDCCCXXII, Died March XXII, MDCCCXCVI. Watch Ye: Stand fast in the faith: Quit you like men: Be strong". 1899
