A landscape scene set by a river with many ruins and trees. The painting depicts the story in Roman mythology of the shepherd Faustulus finding the twins Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf. Faustulus is standing on the river bank while Romulus and Remus and the she-wolf are in foreground to the left.
