Frederick Cayley Robinson (18th August 1862 - 4th January 1927)
In a Wood so Green, 1893
Oil on canvas
755mm x 590mm
In a Wood so Green plays on the traditional theme of a damsel being rescued by a knight on a white charger. In medieval imagery the wood was perceived to be an area of danger and romantic intrigue.
Painted shortly after Robinson completed his studies at the Academie Julian, Paris, this work reveals the influence of the work of Edward Burne-Jones and the Pre-Raphaelites. The use of gold paint and an inscribed panel echoes the Pre-Raphaelite concern with replicating medieval styles, but also shows Robinson’s concern with the decorative, which was to preoccupy him more and more as his career progressed. The unusual arrangement of trees, which push the pensive damsel to the edge of the composition and almost obscure the knight on horseback, further demonstrate the artist’s unconventional approach, as does the trompe l’oeil panel which appears to be fixed to the front of the surface of the painting and signals that rather than rescuing the damsel, the knight has not seen her and that this painting is intended as an ‘Abstract of Melancholy’.
