Description:

Jan Josephsz van Goyen (after)

Landscape with Bridge, 1600-1900

Oil on panel

158mm x 253mm

A typical Dutch landscape of the period with a low horizon and a cloudy sky taking up three-quarters of the panel. Sunlight illuminates a bridge with low railings across a small river on the far left. The cloudy sky leaves the rest of the landscape in relative shadow, especially the river bank on the left. On the bridge are four male figures, including one traveller with a sack on his way towards a village, of which a high church spire is the dominant feature amongst the trees and houses. Between the river and the village lies a meadow with four cows. On this side of the bank, on the far left, is a kind of pole, which constitutes the highest feature in the painting.

Jan van Goyen was born in Leiden in 1596, but moved to The Hague in 1634, where he worked until his death in 1656. He was primarily a landscape painter, producing many atmospheric views of Dutch cities and river scenes.
