Description:A hard backed book called Histoire Generale des Insectes de Surinam et de toute L'Europe (fourth edition, France, 1771). It contains hand coloured plates, engraved by Pieter Sluyter, of original drawing by Maria Sybilla Merian. Maria Sybilla Merian broke with social convention in 1699 when she set sail across the world from the Netherlands, accompanied only by her daughter, to study the insects and plants of the Dutch colony of Suriname. In 1705, having returned from her journey, she published a book about the flora and fauna she had seen, the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. Merian was one of the first scientists to observe and record the process of insect metamorphosis and to recognise the importance of the plants they lived and fed on. The book on display here is the fourth edition of Merian’s Insects of Suriname. Published 54 years after her death, it is a testament to the enduring interest in her work. Before her travels, Merian had taught embroidery and painting to the daughters of wealthy local merchants. Her first book on flowers, Blumenbuch, published in 1675, became an important guide for women practising these art forms.
