Date:1836

Description:A muzzle-loading, percussion shotgun.

This gun began it's life as a Russian, Model 1829, flintlock, military musket, manufactured at the Imperial arsenal in Tula in 1836. A slip of paper found under the buttplate gives the name of Aleksey Mozhala, Tula and the date 1836. This note was probably placed by the maker of the gun.

The Russian government converted their flintlock muskets to percussion in 1844 and they were still in use at the outbreak of the Crimean war in 1854. Many of these were captured and brought back to England as trophies. This example was probably given to a gamekeeper or farmhand for use as a shotgun.

The tang of the brass buttplate still retains traces of the Imperial Eagle. All brass furniture would bear the arsenal mark and the date. The original 41 1/2 inch barrel was shortened by 10 inches and the full lenghth fore-end wood was cut down. The original three brass barrel bands were discarded. The barrel retention was achieved by brazing or soldering a loop to the bottom of the barrel and a wedge was fitted through the fore-end. A ramrod is soldered beneath the barrel.
