A colour postcard by Valentines printed with a portrait of Field Marshal Sir John French.
Sir John French (1852 - 1925) originally joined the navy before transferring to the army in 1874. He was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in 1913. In this capacity French commanded the British Expeditionary Force, the first British force to reach France at the beginning of the First World War. From 1915 to 1918 French served as Commander of the British Home Forces. He was awarded the title of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1921.
