A colour postcard with a portrait of General Sir H.L. Smith-Dorrien in military uniform.
General Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien (1858 - 1930) commanded the Second Infantry Corps of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was also Second Army Commander until April 1915. Smith-Dorrien was dismissed by General John French when he recommended a strategic withdrawal during the second Battle of Ypres. He served as Governor of Gibraltar from 1918 until 1923.
This is one of a set of military postcards probably produced at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
