Description:
Fragment of a glazed ceramic tile from Aylesford's Well, Leamington Spa. It has mortar attached. The tile has green glazed acanthus style decoration and a brown border. The well was built over a mineral spring on the Earl of Aylesford's estate in 1804. Aylesford's Well was the first of seven saline springs that were found in Leamington. The pump was used to draw up saline water from the well. The water was considered beneficial to one's health, and depending on the ailment, patients were instructed to either bathe or drink the water. Earl Aylesford believed that the water should be available to all, and a basin outside the well provided free spring water for the poor.
