Date:1890
Description:This wedding dress was worn at a ceremony in Ecclesfield, South Yorkshire, in around 1890. It is made of cream silk with an embroidered lace overlay. The sleeves and collar are encrusted with beads and beaded tassels, and there are appliquéd flowers in cream on the bodice and skirt. The dress is very typical of the 1890s, when wedding dresses were more simply cut than in previous decades. It has a narrow waist, falls smoothly over the hips and hangs straight to the floor. The style of the dress and the elaborate embellishments suggest that the owner was at least middle class. Not all brides were able to afford a new dress, to be worn on just one day. Some brides bought a best day dress, which they would wear on special occasions for years to come. Others simply wore the best dress they had.
