Description:
Black and white photograph of the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa, c.1970.
The photograph shows the replacement of the saline tank. In this photograph the tank is in position and the crane hook is being cleared. Saline water was used for various treatments at the Royal Pump Rooms from the 19th Century. It was prescribed for bathing and as a drink in the 19th Century and was thought to have curative properties. In the 20th Century it was mainly used for bathing. Saline water is more bouyant than fresh water and patients were able to float and move their limbs more freely. Sometimes extra air would be added to the saline water to provide more stimulation.
