Description:
Black and white photograph of a Vortex bath at the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa, taken around 1960.
The Vortex bath was used at the Royal Pump Rooms as early as the 1940s. It was used to stimulate circulation and treat polio patients. The ledges at the side of the bath were for patients to sit on. From this position they would immerse their legs into the bath. Alternatively they could sit inside the bath and receive treatment on their entire bodies.
