Description:
Black and white photograph taken at the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.
The photograph shows the Paraffin Wax and Berthollet Steam Cabinet area. The Paraffin Wax equipment is to the right and the Berthollet Steam Cabinet is to the left.
Paraffin Wax was first used at the Royal Pump Rooms in 1924. The wax has a low melting point and was used to coat the hands and wrists to insulate them. Once the wax had solidified it would be further insulated with grease proof paper or towels. The heat produced was effective for treating poor circulation and providing pain relief, it was also used to treat arthritis and chillblains.
The Berthollet Steam Cabinet was also first used in 1924. The heat produced by the steam was effective in treating poor circulation and osteoarthritis. It was especially used for problems with the arms or legs. The patient inserted their arms and legs through holes at the front of the cabinet.
