Description:
Black and white photograph inside the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.
View inside the room which held the paraffin wax bath and the Berthollet Steam Cabinet.
The paraffin wax bath is the metal trough-like basin with a chair in front of it. Wax has a low melting point and was used to coat the hands and wrists to insulate them. Once the wax had solidified it would be further insulated using grease proof paper or towels. The heat produced was effective for treating poor circulation and providing pain relief, it was also used to treat arthritis and chillblains.
