Date:1861
Description:A black and white postcard of Queen Victoria.
The photograph was taken by Charles Clifford on 14 November 1861 and was published as a postcard by A. Marion and Co. of Soho Square, London.
Charles Clifford was born in Wales in 1819 but moved to Spain in the early 1850s where he remained until his death in 1863. He is widely regarded as one of the finest 19th Century photographers in Spain. His technical skill lay in the use of large format view to capture architecture and landscapes. This photograph of Queen Victoria wearing a diamond coronet was celebrated as a welcome change from the more numerous domestic type portraits of her. Clifford is thought to have been appointed as Court Photographer to Isabella II of Spain and travelled with her on a number of royal tours.
