Preparatory drawing for The Men Who Lie in the Road, 1991
Pencil and P.V.A. glue on tissue paper
290mm x 206mm
This preparatory drawing for The Men Who Lie In The Road depicts two figures near a barn wall in Old Milverton, near Leamington Spa. Lewty's working process involved producing small drawings on tissue paper which could be built up in layers with PVA glue, ink and acrylic paint to create a textured and partially transparent parchment-like paper. This superimposition of layers echoes the way in which the landscape is created or memories remain in the imagination. In an interview given in 1984 Lewty explained 'I am fascinated by layers and things like palimpsests. I see them as a metaphor for imaginitive experience'.
