The etching depicts two men standing in the courtyard of Lord Leicester's Hospital, Warwick, which was founded by the Earl of Leicester in 1571. Latoix was a painter of landscapes, interiors and figures, and is known to have painted in Britain, Italy and New Mexico. He lived in Leamington Spa from 1882, and in 1895 he was listed as an artist living at 58 Clarendon Avenue.
