Presented by the National Art Collections Fund, 1935. The cartoon appeared in Punch on 5th April 1890. The inscription describes the conversation between the two figures: "Mrs. Scrooge: "I'm writing to ask the / Browns to meet the Jonses here at dinner, / and to the Jonses to meet the Browns. / We owe them both, you know. / Mr. Scrooge: "But I've heard they've / just quarrelled and don't speak!" / I know. They'll refuse / and we needn't give a dinner party / at all!" Du Maurier was born in Paris, but lived in London, where he became established as an illustrator and cartoonist. He worked for Punch from 1864 until his death, producing two cartoons each week. Du Maurier's grand-daughter was the novelist Daphne Du Maurier.
