United States of America silver 1/4 dollar, 1853


Diameter 23.5mm


The obverse features an eagle radiate and bearing a shield, it holds three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right. The inscription reads 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA/ QUAR.DOL' (quarter dollar). The reverse features Christian Gobrecht's 'Seated Liberty' design, Liberty sits on a rock with her body angled to the right but looks over her right shoulder. Her right hand rests on a striped shield that bears a diagonal banner bearing the word 'LIBERTY', in her left hand she holds a pole surmounted by the Phrygian, also known as liberty, cap. Above are thirteen stats representing the original thirteen Anglo-American colonies. The date is below with arrows pointing away at either side.
