India - Portuguese India - silver 1/4 rupia, 1881


Diameter 19mm


The obverse features the bust of Louis I facing left and the inscription 'LUDOVICUS.I.PORTUG: ET. ALGARB: REX', Latin meaning 'Louis I King of Portugal and the Algarve', with the date below. The reverse features a shield which bears a smaller central shield bearing five smaller shields from the coat of arms of the Portuguese Royal House of Braganza-Wettin. There is a crown above and a wreath of olive and oak behind. The inscription reads 'INDIA PORTUGUEZA/ QUARTO DE RUPIA'.
