Redditch copper penny token, 1813

Diameter 34mm

The obverse features the crown with three plumes from the heraldry of the Prince of Wales. The inscription reads 'REDDITCH TOKEN/ ONE PENNY'. The reverse features the inscription 'A POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS/ PAYABLE/ BY/ W.BARTLETT/ &/ W.HEMMING' with the date below. The Napoleonic Wars led to a shortage of regal coinage in the early 19th Century. From 1811 to about 1820 many businesses and companies produced their own token copper and silver coinage of which this is an example.
