Description:

English copper halfpenny, 1826

Diameter 27mm

The obverse features the laureate bust of George IV facing left. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA', Latin for 'George IV By the Grace of God'. The date is below between two dots. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing right. Her right hand rests on a shield at her side which bears the flags of England and Scotland, and she holds Poseidon's trident in her left hand. Below her the rose for England is intertwined with the shamrock for Ireland and the thistle for Scotland. The inscription reads 'BRITANNIAR: REX: FID: DEF', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'King of the Britains Defender of the Faith'.
