The obverse features the bust of George III facing right. The inscription reads 'GEOR: III D:G: BRITT: REX F:D', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'George III By the Grace of God King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith'. The date is below. The reverse features a shield within a garter with a crown above. The shield bears the arms of England in the first and fourth quarters, of Scotland in the second quarter, and of Ireland in the third. The central escutcheon bears the arms of the Royal House of Hanover with a crown above. The garter itself bears the motto of the Order of the Garter, 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE', French meaning 'Shame On Him Who Thinks Evil Of It'.
