Description:

English copper twopence, second issue 1797

Diameter 40mm

The obverse features the laureate draped bust of George III. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS III. D:G REX', Latin, abbreviated for 'King George III By the Grace of God'. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing left, at her side is a shield bearing the united flags of England and Scotland, and she holds an olive branch in her raised right hand. Britannia is pictured by the sea holding Poseidon's trident in her left hand. There is also a ship on the horizon to the left of the coin. The mintmark for 'Soho' is visible underneath the shield to the right of the coin. Both sides of the coin have a raised rim and are known as the 'cartwheel' coinage.
