Description:
English silver halfcrown, 1732
Diameter 33mm
The obverse features the laureate, cuirassed and draped bust of George II facing left. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS. II. DEI. GRATIA', Latin for 'George II By the Grace of God'. The reverse features four shields topped by four crowns and surrounding the Garter Star. The shield to the left bears the coat of arms of the Royal House of Hanover, the top shield bears the three lions of England and the single lion rampant of Scotland, the right shield the three fleur-de-lys of France and the bottom shield the harp of Ireland. There are roses and plumes alternately in the angles of the shields. This signifies that the bullion used to make the coin came from the Pitcoale & Seacole Company. The inscription reads 'M.B.F.ET.H.REX.FD.B.ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.ET.E.1732', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneburg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire'.
