Italian silver lira, 1863


Diameter 22mm


The obverse features the bust of Vittorio Emanuele II facing right and the inscription 'VITTORIO EMANUELE II' with the date below. Directly underneath the bust is the name 'Ferraris', possibly that of the designer or engraver. The reverse features the coat of arms of the Italian Royal House of Savoy, a shield within a medal collar with a crown above, the shield bears a cross. The coat of arms is surrounded by a wreath. The inscription reads 'REGNO D'ITALIA', 'Kingdom of Italy', and the denomination below is abbreviated to '1.L'. To the left of the denomination is the mintmark for Milan, 'M', and to the right are the initials 'BM' within a rectangle.
