This medal was struck following the death of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1821. The obverse features the bust of Napoleon I facing right with the inscription 'EMPEROR NAPOLEON' within a full wreath. Around the outside is the inscription 'DIED 5 MAY BURIED IN RUPERTS VALLEY ST HELENA 9 MAY 1821'. Below the wreath are the names 'Thomason & Jones.D'. The reverse features an obituary to Napoleon. Napoleon Bonaparte was initially a General during the French Revolution but rose to become First Consul of the French Republic and later Emperor. The real turning point in Napoleon's success was his Russian campaign of 1812 which proved disastrous. However, he was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 by a British army led by the Duke of Wellington alongside Prussian forces.
