Description:

French nickel 25 centimes, 1903

Diameter 23mm

The obverse features Marianne wearing a wreathed Phrygian, or liberty, cap and facing left. To the left of the bust is the name 'A. Patey' possibly that of the designer. The inscription around the outside reads 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE', 'Republic of France'. The reverse features the denomination within a central square around three sides of which the motto 'LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE', Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood is inscribed. Below is the date flanked by the Parisian Privy Marks of the cornucopia for the Mint Director and the torch for the Engraver General.
