Description:
French silver 15 sols, 1793-4
Diameter 22mm
The obverse features the bust of Louis XVI facing left. Underneath is a Privy Mark and the year '1791' flanked by two dots. The inscription around the outside reads 'LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANCOIS', 'Louis XVI King of the French'. The reverse features La Genie de France (the spirit of France). It is difficult to see on this example but La Genie holds a stylet ornamented with the eye of reason with which she is writing the word 'Constitution' on a tablet resting on a pedestal. The image is flanked by the denomination in two parts, '15 Sol'. Underneath the denomination to the right is the mintmark for Paris, 'A', and to the left an unidentified Privy Mark. Underneath the central image is written 'L'AN 3 DE LA LIBERTE', 'Year 3 of Freedom', and around the top the inscription reads 'REGNE DE LA LOI'.
