The obverse features the shield from the City of Birmingham's Coat of Arms. The inscription reads 'ONE POUND NOTE/PAYABLE AT THE WORKHOUSE/FOR 240 TOKENS'. The reverse features the Birmingham parish workhouse with the date below. The inscription reads 'BRIMINGHAM/ONE PENNY'. These coins were issued as poor relief and could be redeemed by local shopkeepers at the workhouse.
