Description:

French bronze two sol, 1793

Diameter 33mm

The obverse features a tablet bearing the words 'LES HOMMES SONT EGAUX DEVANT LA LOI', 'All men are equal before the law'. This inscription is not legible on this example. The radiate symbol above is an eye and to either side are a bunch of grapes and wheat. Underneath is the date from the French Revolutionary Calendar, 'L'AN II'. Around the outside the inscription reads 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE'. The reverse features scales with an oak wreath attached. The Phrygian, or liberty, cap is above with the denomination abbreviated to '2s' in the centre. To either side is the inscription 'LIBERTE EGALITE', 'Liberty Equality'. The mintmark 'B', possibly of Rouen, is below. At the base is the date flanked by two Privy Marks which are illegible.
