Description:

French bronze two sol coin, 1791

Diameter 33mm

The obverse features the bust of Louis XVI facing left. The date is below and the inscription reads 'LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANCOIS', 'Louis XVI, King of the French'. Just visible to the right of the date is the Paris mintmark, 'A'. The reverse features the Phrygian, or liberty, cap on a pole bound up in the fasces. This is a bundle of sticks bound together to signify unity and authority. There is a wreath behind composed of olive and oak branches entwined. The number '2' and the letter 'S' flank the fasces. Inscribed around the base is 'L'AN 5 DE LA LIBERTE' and around the rest of the coin are the words 'LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI', 'Nation, Law, King'.
