Description:

French bronze 2 sol coin, 1795

Diameter 33mm

The obverse features the bust of Louis XVI facing left. Only some of the writing around the outside is visible, reading, 'LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANCOIS', 'Louis XVI, King of the French'. The date and any other marks towards the bottom are obscured by wear. The reverse features the Phrygian, or liberty, cap on a pole bound up in the fasces. The fasces is a bundle of sticks tied together to signify unity and authority. There is a wreath behind and the number '2' and the letter 'S' flank the fasces. The writing around the outside is largely illegible but reads, 'LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI' around the top and 'L'AN 4 DE LA LIBERTE' around the base.
