French copper sol, 1779

Diameter 21mm

The obverse features the bust of Louis XVI facing left. The inscription reads 'LUDOV. XVI. D. GRATIA', 'Louis XVI By the Grace of God'. There is an unidentified mintmark below. The reverse features the French Royal Coat of Arms - a shield bearing three fleur-de-lys with a crown above. The inscription, which is barely legible on this example, reads 'FRANCE ET NAVARRE REX', 'King of France and Navarre'.
