Description:

French bronze 5 centimes, 1877

Diameter 24mm

The obverse features a female bust facing left, possibly representing either Liberty or Marianne. Underneath is the name 'Qudine', which may be the designer or engraver. The outside bears the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE' and the date divided by two stars. The reverse features a wreath within which is the denomination and the Parisian Mintmark, 'A'. To either side of the 'A' are the Privy Marks of an anchor for the Engraver General of Paris and a bee for the Mint Director of Paris. Around the outside of the wreath is the motto 'LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE', 'Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood', and each word is followed by a five-pointed star.
