French copper five centimes, 1915

Diameter 24mm

The obverse features the bust of Marianne facing right. She is wearing the Phrygian, also known as liberty cap, with an olive branch attached. The inscription reads 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE' and the name of the designer, Daniel-Dupuis, is below the bust. The reverse features a design known as 'La Republique Protegeant L'Enfance' by Daniel-Dupuis. The female personification of the Republic is seated wearing a helmet with a cockerel on top. In her left hand she holds an olive branch. Her right arm is placed around a child and she holds a spear with the French flag attached in her right hand. The child seated at her side carries a shaft of wheat representing agriculture in its right hand and a hammer representing industry in its left. The inscription around the outside reads 'LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE', 'Liberty Equality Brotherhood', and the date is below. To the left and right are the Parisian Privy Marks of the torch for the Engraver General and the caduceus for the Mint Director. The name of 'Daniel-Dupuis' is barely legible between the caduceus and the date to the bottom left. The denomination, abbreviated to '5c' is featured on a scroll to the bottom right.
