Description:
Anglesey copper penny token, 1787
Diameter 33mm
The obverse features the monogram of the Perys Mining Company, PMCo, with the date above and the inscription 'WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY' around the outside. The reverse features a shrouded Druidic head within a wreath of oak branches. Tokens such as this were produced from 1787-1797 when there was a shortage of regal copper coinage. This led the Anglesey Mines Company to produce its own copper penny and halfpenny tokens, a practice that became widespread during the period.
