Description:

French aluminium-brass 1 franc token, 1924

Diameter 22mm

The obverse features Mercury wearing the winged helmet and seated facing left. He has the caduceus in his right hand and is resting his arm a lyre. Mercury is known as the God of trade, abundance and commercial success and is depicted here with goods at his feet. The inscription reads 'COMMERCE INDUSTRIE', 'Commerce, Indsutry'. The date is below along with the name 'Dombard', possibly that of the designer or engraver. The reverse features 'BON POUR 1 FRANC', literally 'Good for 1 Franc', and the letters 'BR.AL' which stand for brass-aluminium. The inscription around the outside reads 'CHAMBRES.DE.COMMERCE.DE.FRANCE', 'French Chambers of Commerce'.
