Dudley copper one penny token, 1812
Diameter 34mm
The obverse features an anvil above the date within a central ring. Around the outside is the inscription 'DUDLEY/ONE PENNY TOKEN'. The reverse features a vice and the inscription 'JAMs WILKINSON VICE MAKER' within a central ring. The incsription around the outside reads 'A POUND NOTE FOR EVERY 240 TOKENS'. The Napoleonic Wars led to a shortage of regal coinage in the early 19th Century. From 1811 many businesses and companies produced their own token copper and silver coinage of which this is an example.
