French copper sol, 1784

Diameter 28mm

The obverse features the bust of Louis XVI facing left. The inscription reads 'LUDOV. XVI. D. GRATIA', Latin for 'Louis XVI By the Grace of God'. The mintmark is below. The reverse features the French Royal Coat of Arms this consists of a shield bearing three fleur-de-lys and topped by a crown. The inscription reads 'Francia Et Navarre Rex', Latin for 'King of France and Navarre', followed by the date. A further mintmark is below, between the words 'Et' and 'Navarre'.
