Belgian silver fifty centimes, 1866

The obverse features the bust of Leopold II facing left. The inscription reads 'LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES', 'Leopold II King of the Belgians'. At the base is the name L.Wiener, possibly the designer or engraver. The reverse features the Belgian coat of arms, a shield bearing a lion rampant which is the national symbol of Belgium, encircled by a medal collar with a crown above and two sceptres crossed behind. One of the sceptres is topped with a lion and the other with a hand. Above is the Belgian national moto 'L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE', which translates as 'Strength through Unity'. To the left of the coat of arms is the number '50' and to the right the inscription 'CS' (centimes). The date is below.
