Description:
English brass token, 1837
Diameter 21mm
The obverse features the 'young head' bust of Queen Victoria facing left. The inscription reads 'VICTORIA REGINA' and the date is below. The reverse features a male figure riding over a dragon. This is very similar to the depiction of St George and the dragon on other coins of the period. The male figure wears a crown and carries a sword. The inscription reads 'TO HANOVER'. It is thought that this token celebrated the departure of the Duke of Cumberland to Hanover. He was to take up the Hanoverian titles that Victoria could not inherit under German law because she was a woman.
